Portland Young
Offenders' Institution a disgrace (18 November 2009)
Commenting on the Chief Inspector
of Prisons' report on HMYOI Portland, Jon Collins, Campaign Director
for the Criminal Justice Alliance, said:
'It is a disgrace that young people
are being held in "filthy and squalid" accommodation, putting
at risk their health, wellbeing and rehabilitation.
'The failure of the prison service
to provide safe and decent accommodation at Portland Young Offenders'
Institution compromises the work of prison governors and staff and risks
the welfare of the young people who are held there.
'The prison service must act immediately
to close those parts of prison that the Chief Inspector of Prisons has
judged unfit for habitation.'
